Natural vs Chemical UV Protection
Most outdoor apparel advertises a UPF rating. Most buyers assume it holds for the life of the garment. The source of that rating matters more than the number, and it decides whether the protection lasts.
UPF, the Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures how much ultraviolet light passes through a fabric to reach the skin. UPF 50 blocks about 98%. UPF 40 blocks about 97.5%. UPF 30 about 96%. UPF 15 roughly 93%. Past 40 the gains are marginal, which is why the number on the label matters less than where it comes from. There are two very different paths to the same rating.
Two paths to the same number
Structural UPF
Comes from the fabric itself. Fiber type, weave density, thread thickness, and color combine to physically block UV. Tightly woven, naturally dense, or darker fabrics reach high UPF with no chemical help. This protection is inherent to the garment. It does not wash out, fade in sunlight, or degrade with use. As long as the fabric structure is intact, the rating holds.
Chemical UPF
Comes from a topical treatment. UV-absorbing or reflecting compounds are bonded to the fiber surface during finishing, which lets a thin, light, low-density fabric advertise UPF 30+. The appeal is obvious: lightweight cloth that would otherwise rate poorly gets to carry a strong number – at least temporarily. The catch: the treatment sits on top of the fabric rather than in it, and it easily washes away.
The durability problem
Chemical UPF treatments degrade with washing. The exact rate depends on the chemistry, the wash conditions, and the original concentration, but the pattern is consistent across wash-cycle testing. Premium treatments tend to hold most of their effect for 30 to 40 washes before the slide begins. Budget treatments fade faster and further, dropping through the UPF 15 threshold within a season of regular washing and continuing down toward UPF 8 over the garment's life. A shirt sold as UPF 40 can be a single-digit shirt within a year, still carrying its original label, with no way for you to see what remains.
For a garment worn often in heat and washed accordingly, this is the whole point. The protection you paid for is not necessarily the protection you keep.
What color does to the rating
Color is a real variable, and it works harder than most buyers assume. Dye molecules absorb ultraviolet light, so darker, more saturated fabrics block meaningfully more UV than pale ones cut from the same cloth. An undyed cotton tee can test as low as UPF 5; dye that same shirt a deep navy or black and its rating can climb several times higher. If dye were the only lever available, dark would be the honest recommendation.
The same dye molecules that absorb ultraviolet also absorb visible and infrared light, and that second absorption is heat. So the two scales rise together. At the same fabric and the same weight, the darker shade blocks more UV and runs warmer in direct sun, while the lighter shade feels cooler and lets more of the UV through. No color wins both ends, and we would rather name the trade than paper over it. What weave density adds is a higher floor under every shade, since more fiber in the path of the light means less of it gets through before dye enters the equation. From there the choice is honest and yours: reach for the darker colorway when sun exposure is the priority, the lighter one when heat is.

Chemical-free protection
We use no chemical UPF treatments. Every garment we make draws its UV protection from fabric structure: the fiber, the weave, the construction. The protection lasts as long as the garment does. Wash it a hundred times and the performance does not meaningfully change, because there is nothing on the surface to wash away.
If a UPF rating is part of your decision, the useful question for any brand is simple: is the protection structural or chemical? Most will not volunteer the distinction. Asking forces the answer. If it is structural, the rating is a permanent property of the garment. If it is chemical, the rating is a starting point that goes away in a matter of washes.
